Thanks for your local leadership!

Missourians benefit every day from the dedicated energies and countless hours devoted by a group of more than 3,600 men and women from communities across the state. These public servants are elected by local constituents and do not receive compensation for their tireless efforts. They are the local school board members of Missouri.

Mrs. Suann DeWitt was the 2016 Growing Teachers grant recipient at Columbia University Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project summer institute in New York City.  Mrs. DeWitt attended the week-long conference learning about implementing the Lucy Calkin’s Reading Units of Study and ways to turn classrooms into richly literate environments.  She met and collaborated with teachers throughout the world during the five days of training.  Mrs. DeWitt was fortunate to receive training from Samantha Barrett and Shanna Schwartz.  They have co-authored several reading units on best practices in reading workshop, the role of assessment-based reading instruction to support student growth, and implementing instruction that increases comprehension skills.  She also attended sessions led by author Matt de la Pena who shared his struggles in reading and recalled the teachers who supported him in becoming an avid reader and writer.  Mrs. DeWitt is excited to share her knowledge and support teachers in utilizing the Reading Units of Study.

The second day of school brought the Oak Ridge Community together to celebrate the 2nd Annual Back to School Splash and Bash.  6th-12th graders had various activities down on the ball fields as well as visiting the community booths.  They had individual and team games.  The teachers came out the winners in the cross country challenge.  K-5th graders were able to visit a bounce house, water slides and community booths.  The day ended with the entire student body gathering in the multi-purpose gym to watch the Class of 2017 take on the faculty in a volleyball game.  The faculty claimed the crown this year!

This event was a major success due to the many people that provided their time and efforts.  We would like to thank the following groups and individuals:  Oak Ridge R-VI Foundation, Oak Ridge Community Athletic Association, Oak Ridge PTO, Oak Ridge Booster Club, Oak Ridge Elementary Basketball Association, and Ron Tracy and crew.  We look forward to continuing this event for years to come!

To start the new school year off the Oak Ridge R-VI school staff hit the road.  The staff loaded up on two school buses to tour the district and visit district patrons.  Staff visited Glueck Enterprises, Fronabarger Concreters, Thomas Farms, Baldwin Racing Engines, and Apple Creek Winery.  At each of these stops district staff were given a tour of the operation and learned what each of these businesses expects from new employees and graduates of Oak Ridge Schools.

We would like to thank each of these individuals for taking their time to welcome our staff.  It was a great learning experience to see not only where our students live, but also to see some examples of successful enterprises that are located right here within the boundaries of the Oak Ridge R-VI School District.

District staff are ready for the tour!  Roger Thomas and grandson Noah Unterreiner speak about Thomas Farms.  Thomas Farms
Jeff Baldwin explains the process at Baldwin Racing Engines to Hannah Sedgwick.   Teachers enjoyed a tour and lunch at Apple Creek Winery.  Fronabargers Concreters  Jason Glueck with Glueck Enterprises.
